About two and a half million adults in the Netherlands suffer from chronic low back pain. This is a very large group of the Dutch population. Although low back pain can vary greatly in terms of its severity, these symptoms are always annoying. Do you also suffer from annoying lower back pain and would like to get rid of it? If so, please read on.
The spine and low back pain
The spine is made up of 33 vertebrae. These vertebrae provide strength and stability to the entire body. The spine surrounds the spinal cord, protecting the nerves that run into the spinal cord. The back can be divided into four major parts. From top to bottom, these are the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral parts of the back.
Low back pain occurs mainly in the lumbar part of the back, seen from the side, the hollow at the bottom of the back.
What are the causes of low back pain?
There is no clear cause for low back pain, but there are known factors that can increase the likelihood of low back pain. These factors include: being overweight; a lot of stress; sitting still for long periods of time, such as driving a car for a long time or sitting at your desk for a long time; a lot of lifting that involves a lot of twisting or straining of the back and heavy physical work.
Low back pain is often accompanied by pain in the lower back. This pain may come gradually and get worse over time or it may just occur suddenly. The severity of pain varies for everyone. Often the pain is of a nagging nature in the lower back and certain movements or postures may cause more symptoms. The back may feel stiff after sitting or lying still for a long time. Sometimes there is also radiating pain to the legs.
What can you do for low back pain yourself?
If you suffer from low back pain, you may want to do low back stretching exercises at home. The pain in your back causes you to tighten the surrounding muscles, and stretching exercises can provide relaxation in these areas. In addition, it is important to keep moving calmly. Think daily housework or a short walk. Good physical health also helps prevent low back pain.
Care at TOPCHIRO
If your back pain persists for a long time or gets worse, our experienced chiropractors at TOPCHIRO are here for you! When you have made an appointment with us, we will first conduct a physical examination with you. If necessary, the examination is supplemented by a myovision scan.
A myovision scan uses electrodes to measure the electrical activity of the muscles in your back. With complaints in the low back, muscles may unconsciously tighten a lot because, for example, vertebrae in your back are not moving properly. We can see this activity on the scan.
Based on the results of the examination and/or myovision scan, we will work with you to create a plan of care. This care plan will consist of three distinct phases. An intensive phase, a stabilization phase and a maintenance phase.
