The lumbar spinal column

The base of the back is formed by the spine. This is an accumulation of all kinds of vertebrae that provide strength to the body and also protect the spinal cord. The spine can be divided into four parts from top to bottom: cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral. When low back pain occurs, it often involves complaints in the lumbar part of the spine.

The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that run from the senses to the brain as well as from the brain to the muscles. Nerves run in and out through the vertebrae through the spinal cord to get to these structures. In addition, there are a variety of muscles and tendons around the spine that allow the back to move.

Origin of low back pain

So the back is a very complex composition of many different structures, and as a result, symptoms can be caused in many different ways. For example, irritations can be caused by pinched nerves, wear and tear on the vertebrae and overworked muscles.

The way those irritations arise is unclear in many cases. However, there are some known risk factors for the development of low back pain:

  • Obesity;
  • Having a lot of stress;
  • Performing heavy
  • physical work;
  • Holding the same posture for long periods of time;
  • Doing a lot of lifting.

Symptoms of lower back pain

Lower back pain is mostly nagging pain, but the pain can also be very severe in some cases. Sometimes the pain makes it almost impossible to move at all, or certain positions or movements cause much more pain than others. Pain may also radiate to one or both upper legs.

What is a myovision back scan?

A myovision back scan is a scan that measures the electrical activity of your muscles through electrodes. The degree of electrical activity in your muscles is related to the degree of muscle tension. In fact, when muscles squeeze they produce a small electrical signal.

But why should we be interested in measuring muscle tension in your low back? When you do not move your vertebrae in your back naturally, it affects the surrounding structures, including the muscles. In fact, muscles then tend to contract. So with this scan, we can find out where the irritations in the low back are.

The scan indicates in different colors the degree of tension of the muscles surrounding a vertebra. Red indicates very high muscle tension, green normal muscle tension, and when your muscles are weakened or fatigued, the scan indicates this with a yellow color.

Chiropractic and the myovision back scan

The complex structure of the back can cause many different complaints to arise. In order to establish proper treatment, it is very important to find out where the irritation is located. The myovision scan can help the chiropractor with this.

By comparing the results of the scan with the normal situation, the chiropractor can easily figure out where the irritations are in your back. In this way, the chiropractor can start a targeted treatment in which the imbalance between the nervous system and the joints will be eliminated by giving manipulations. This will normalize muscle tension and reduce your low back pain.
