What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a holistic healthcare discipline that focuses on your overall function and well-being. By prioritizing the healthy function of the neuro-spinal system, chiropractic helps you function closer to your optimal level so that you can do more of what you love, less of what you don't. The unique relationship between the spine and the nervous system, and the importance of healthy spinal function on overall health, represents the foundation of the existence for the chiropractic profession.

Quite simply, health cannot be achieved if the integrity of the nervous system is diminished. Improper spinal function diminishes nervous system integrity. Therefore, proper spinal function is required to achieve optimal health. Chiropractic is focused on identifying areas of the spine that are interfering with neurological integrity, and correcting the movement patterns through a hands-on caring approach. By restoring proper alignment and mobility, the goal is to remove interference from the body's innate drive to heal itself, naturally.

What is a chiropractor?

Many do not realize the extensive training required to become a Doctor of Chiropractic, also known as a “Chiropractor”. In Cyprus, Chiropractic is a regulated health profession requiring multiple levels of education and certification. Following at least 3 years of undergraduate studies, chiropractic professionals undertake 4 years of intensive doctoral training including but not limited to Diagnosis (Symptomatology, Clinical Laboratory, Neurodiagnosis, Orthopedics), Anatomy (Histology, Neuroanatomy, Musculoskeletal, Internal Thorax, Abdomen, Pelvis), Clinical Practice and Ethics, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiography, Chiropractic Skills, Biochemistry and Nutrition, Physiology (Biomechanics, Systems, Neuroscience, Immunology), Microbiology, Pathology, and Rehabilitation.

The final year of this educational degree involves a 12-month clinical internship where students manage and administer care to members of the public while being overseen by a licensed chiropractic clinician. To practice, graduates of accredited chiropractic programs must pass licensing examinations to further demonstrate proficiency in knowledge, understanding, and application of basic sciences and clinical chiropractic care. Finally, to practice with the title 'Doctor', chiropractors must also pass a legislation and ethics examination. It takes many years and much perseverance to serve the public as a practicing chiropractor. At TOPCHIRO, our certified and licensed Doctors of Chiropractic are dedicated to providing clinical excellence in your chiropractic care.

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractors expertly assess a person by performing mechanical and neurological tests to identify any misalignments or dysfunctional segments of the spine and joints that may be causing issues such as loss of function, pain, loss of mobility, and other related issues. Scanning technology is used to assess function of the nervous system. If clinically required, the Chiropractor may take x-rays to get a deeper understanding of that person's structural, functional and mechanical issues. Once the assessment has been completed, the chiropractor will explain if you are a candidate for chiropractic care or not, what the problem is, and discuss options for next steps.

In-office care typically consists of health education, hands-on neurobiomechanical assessments to verify if intervention is needed or not in a session, and, if necessary, delivery of a chiropractic correction for adjustment of the nervous system function back into balance. This is done by hand, using drop pieces on the chiropractic table, or through a handheld instrument. Soft tissue work and exercise and lifestyle advice may also be provided.

What exactly is a chiropractic adjustment?

Some people will call the manual thrust or hands-on work that a chiropractor performs on the joints an “adjustment,” researchers call it “chiropractic spinal manipulation,” other chiropractors will call it a “chiropractic correction.” At TOPCHIRO, you may hear us sometimes using the words correction and adjustment interchangeably.

To be most accurate, however, we prefer the term “correction”. This is because we understand that it is your own body and lifestyle that will make the adjustment following the chiropractic correction of the bad habit in your spine (aka a chiropractic “subluxation”). The correction may be an event that happens on our chiropractic table, but the adjustment is a process that takes time.

What that means is that we love collaborating with your other health professionals in your circle of care, whoever else you may choose. We do not try to do it all.

What's involved in being part of the TOPCHIRO network?

Being part of this international brand means that we can collaborate with chiropractors around the world and share our wisdom and expertise. We believe that by constantly learning and improving our skills, we can better serve our clients and provide the best possible care. That's why we participate in two calls every week with our global network of chiropractors, which helps us stay informed and connected to the latest developments in chiropractic care. We have direct access to chiropractic thought leaders such as TOPCHIRO founder and best-selling author of “Restoring Reason," Dr. Travis Corcoran. It also keeps us informed of the latest opportunities for educational events to continuously improve our services.

I am currently doing physio; should I wait to finish, or can I still see you?

That's a personal choice for you to decide. But yes, if you want to see us whilst doing Physio you can. Using chiropractic alongside your physiotherapy may be synergistic. While we wouldn't want to speak on behalf of another health professional, we can say that chiropractic works well along most other health modalities because it works on ensuring optimal brain-body communication.

If this communication is improved, then you may find other health efforts working that much better. Chiropractic adjustments allow the muscles to return to a natural state as the compensatory tightness and possible spasms are not needed once the body is realigned.

Can I receive chiropractic care while I'm pregnant?

Yes, you can and it can be very beneficial for you to do so in order to have a more comfortable pregnancy. The only thing to note is that we won't do x-rays in this case during the initial assessment for obvious reasons.

What is the minimum age for having chiropractic treatments?

The youngest patient we've taken care of so far was a few minutes old. Please note that the techniques are specially adapted for such cases and we have undertaken additional training in pediatrics.

Am I too old to have chiropractic treatment?

This is a question we get a lot, in principle there are no age limitations to receive chiropractic treatment. If you would like treatment, then we are ready and delighted to work with you. Whether we begin to treat you is not certain until we have performed a full initial chiropractic assessment to ensure the treatment will be safe and establishes if the structure itself is in good enough health.

I've got arthritis, will the treatment still work?

Whilst we cannot heal arthritis, chiropractic can still be immensely beneficial for you. As it promotes proper mobility of the spinal joints, postural alignment and nerve function this is always vitally important for health reasons. You may also experience an improvement in function, mobility and posture.

As chiropractic adjustments promote a more relaxed nervous system, this in turn can boost your body's capacity to express health. Chiropractic treatment therefore promotes additional resilience in the body that can make a difference. In some cases, patients experience a noticeable reduction in pain and inflammation.

Do you think my problem is from being overweight?

There are many factors that can contribute towards musculoskeletal or neurological imbalances. Bad posture, slips, trips and falls, stresses, accidents and traumas, professional hazards, to name but a few. Increased weight has been linked to numerous adverse health outcomes. So being overweight is likely to be amongst other contributing factors that have led you to where you are today.

I'm taking medication for osteoporosis, can you help me?

Osteoporosis does not necessarily preclude you from chiropractic care. However, it is important to understand the stage you're at and if possible see the latest bone density results. In many cases, we can still help. However, to be absolutely certain we would have to conduct a full chiropractic assessment and evaluation first.

Can chiropractic help me improve my sport performance?

Absolutely! Chiropractors are regularly employed by athletes and peak performers to improve the brain-body communication, prevent injuries, improve functional strength, optimize muscle activation and pre-activation, optimize alignment for higher precision and range of motion. Some sportsmen and women who use chiropractic treatment regularly include: Cristiano Ronaldo, Evander Holifield, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Ronda Rousey to name a few.

Why is good posture important?

Good posture ensures that your body is able to work the way it was designed to. Every joint, bone, organ and structure has its correct place and position in the body. Muscles, joints, organs and systems, work better when posture is good. The other benefit is that good posture promotes a healthy weight distribution across the body, which helps protect the joints.

On the other side you have the central nervous system running through the structure, powering up all the muscles, organs, systems and functions throughout the body. Good posture promotes great nerve function by allowing the information to flow freely back and forth between the brain and body, allowing the body to express health more readily.

How long will the process take?

This will depend largely on three things:

  1. How chronic the issues are, how long you’ve been suffering for
  2. What your overall health and condition of the nervous system are like
  3. The health and integrity of your structure
  4. Your own motivation and expectations

Once a complete examination has taken place, your Doctor of Chiropractic will work with you to develop a plan of care, which will include recommendations on frequency and duration of chiropractic visits.

I'm not currently in pain, so is there any benefit in receiving chiropractic care?

It’s a good idea to have a spinal health check every month, or as frequently as necessary given your individual lifestyle, stress levels, physical activity, etc. Like checking other functions, such as enzyme, vitamins, minerals and cholesterol levels through blood analysis, dental check-ups and eye checks, your spine is equally if not more important than those, as it protects the central nervous system controlling nearly all functions in your body.

As a way of analogy, to wait for pain as a sign of bad health is like waiting for a car-breakdown as confirmation it was due for a service. As chiropractors we work in the health spectrum, so we want to understand what’s in a healthy range and what isn’t. From there we want to get you back to an optimum or at least a healthy range.

I've hurt my coccyx, can you help me?

Tailbone pain, or Coccydynia, can be tremendously debilitating. Our chiropractors are have received extra training in addressing coccyx pain. If you are suffering with tailbone pain, get in touch with us to see if we can help.

I've had surgery on some parts of my spine; can you still adjust me?

That will depend on the type of surgery you’ve had. If you’ve had a spinal fusion then we will avoid adjusting that area but may explore the possibility of working on other areas that can be safely adjusted.

Our comprehensive initial chiropractic consultation will carefully measure and explore your entire spine, and in particular the affected area to ascertain the exact current position. We will then be in a position to advise you on your options going forwards.

What should I expect at the first appointment?

Please see our New Clients section for information about what to expect at your first appointment.

How many sessions will I need to fix my issue?

Every case is unique, however, chiropractic care relies on a cumulative effect of improvements in function back to ideal health. Our initial consultation is in-depth to ascertain how many sessions you would most likely need. If you are looking for a one-off ‘quick fix’ then chiropractic care might not be the right approach for you.

What should I wear for my appointments?

Comfortable clothing is the best. We usually will have you in a gown at your initial appointment, but for regular visits, clothing of your choice is fine. For best results, it is better to be in loose-fitting, comfortable wear. Prior to getting on the chiropractic tables, we will ask you to remove any belts, necklaces, jewelry, hats, etc. For those who wear makeup, we will typically have clients lie face down on their stomach on the chiropractic table. Sometimes your makeup may get smudged by the facepaper.

What is the clicking / cracking sound I'm experiencing? I'm nervous that it's my ligaments or bones breaking…

Not every chiropractic correction involves a clicking/cracking sound, nor is it required. However, when it does occur, this is simply a phenomenon within the spinal joint that occurs when gas (probably carbon dioxide or nitrogen or a combination thereof) is being released because the atmospheric pressure within the joint itself has changed from an area of high pressure to low pressure (the same when you open a soda can). It has nothing to do with ligaments or bones!
