Do you suffer from a spinning sensation, lightheadedness or instability? These are very annoying symptoms that can have a lot of impact on your daily life. A chiropractor can help you with dizziness symptoms.

In this article you will read what dizziness is, what its causes may be and how a chiropractor can provide relief when you suffer from dizziness symptoms.

What is dizziness?

There are several types of dizziness. Vertigo, also called spinning vertigo, is a form of dizziness where you feel as if the environment is spinning around you or when it feels as if you are spinning in relation to the environment.

Disequilibrium is a form of dizziness in which you experience imbalance or instability without feeling dizzy. Dizziness can also manifest itself as feeling light-headed. Dizziness can be accompanied by nausea, difficulty concentrating and fainting.

The causes of dizziness symptoms

Dizziness can have a variety of causes. Some of the common causes will be explained further in this article.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Dizziness

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Dizziness (BPPD) is a condition in which you suddenly become very dizzy when you suddenly move your head, such as when turning over in bed.

BPPD is caused by the crystals in the inner ear that are part of the balance organ. In BPPD, these crystals have shifted out of their normal position, constantly sending out wrong signals. As a result, complaints arise.

An abnormal position of the cervical vertebrae

Through the neck, information is transmitted from the body to the brain. This includes information regarding balance. When there is an abnormal position of the cervical vertebrae, these nerves can no longer function properly.

This causes complaints. An abnormal position can be caused by an accident or osteoarthritis, for example.

Stress and anxiety

Severe emotions, such as stress and anxiety, can cause dizziness because these emotions in turn trigger other physical reactions.

For example, stress and anxiety can lead to increased heart rate and breathing, making you dizzy.

Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure, also known as hypotension, can lead to decreased blood flow to the brain. This can cause you to suffer from dizziness.

Low blood pressure can be caused by taking certain medications, underlying conditions or dehydration, among others.

The use of alcohol or drugs (intoxications)

Excessive intake of alcohol or drugs can cause the disruption of many systems in the body, causing dizziness symptoms.

For example, alcohol and drugs affect blood pressure, blood sugar and the organ of balance. Alcohol and drugs also tend to cause fluid loss due to an increase in urine production.

Other causes

Neurological disorders, such as migraines or multiple sclerosis (MS), can also result in dizziness because of a disruption in the functioning of the nervous system.

In addition, there are medications with dizziness as a side effect.

Chiropractor care for dizziness complaints

A chiropractor’s care depends on the type of dizziness and its underlying cause. Therefore, there will be an intake interview before starting treatment. During this conversation, the chiropractor will find out what the symptoms you are experiencing are and when they arose.

A physical examination also takes place in which the chiropractor looks for the underlying cause of the dizziness symptoms.

Chiropractic is a form of care that focuses on treating complaints of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system. For example, chiropractic is effective in treating BPPD or an abnormal position of the cervical vertebrae, among other conditions. During treatment, the practitioner will briefly apply force to specific points in the body in order to restore the function of these structures and reduce symptoms.

The practitioner can also offer advice on your posture, movement and lifestyle.

When the dizziness symptoms have an underlying cause that is not easily treatable through chiropractic care, such as low blood pressure, the chiropractor will refer you to a doctor.
