What’s going on with a herniated disc?
Between your vertebrae are discs of cartilage. These gel-like discs serve as pads and allow you to move your back smoothly. A herniated disc involves a bulging of one of these intervertebral discs. This can cause it to compress a nerve in the back. Often this involves a nerve running from the back to the leg.
In nerve suppression, the nerve is unfairly stimulated. As a result, you may experience symptoms in your back, leg and sometimes even foot. Usually the symptoms are only noticeable on one side. People often describe the pain symptoms as a sharp and stabbing pain. You may also experience tingling or a dull feeling in your buttock. This feeling can radiate into the leg.
The symptoms can be constant, but often get worse when making certain movements. Especially movements in a standing or sitting position can make the pain worse. A herniated disc can also cause you to have less strength in your leg.
What are causes of a herniated disc?
A herniated disc can have several causes. In most cases, there is a genetic cause. This means that by definition, some people already have an increased risk of developing a herniated disc. In addition, lifting heavy things, adopting the wrong posture or too little exercise, among other things, increases the risk of a herniated disc.
What is the connection between a hernia and childbirth?
During pregnancy, a lot changes in a woman’s body. First, the body’s center of gravity will change as additional weight is placed on the woman’s body.
This will automatically change body posture. This weight at the same time increases the forces on the back.
As pregnancy progresses, exercise takes more and more effort. This will make you less likely to keep moving a lot. Changing posture, higher forces on the back and decreased exercise are all risk factors for developing a herniated disc. The change in hormone levels also seems to play a role in this.
Finally, even more pressure is temporarily placed on the woman’s body during childbirth. The moment you slowly start picking up daily activities again a few weeks after giving birth, you may experience quite a bit of the symptoms consistent with a herniated disc.
Care for a hernia after childbirth
When there is a severe hernia, surgery will be needed to help you get rid of the symptoms. In most women, however, there is a mild hernia. The symptoms of a mild hernia may subside on their own after a few weeks, but in many cases the symptoms remain long-term. To prevent this from happening, chiropractic care can help!
Chiropractic is a healing method, which restores the connection between the nervous system and the joints. To do this, the chiropractor uses short and measured manipulations. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to improve spinal mobility.
With a herniated disc, chiropractic care can result in better distribution of pressure on the intervertebral discs. This causes the disc to bulge less and not press on the surrounding nerves. As a result, your symptoms may have subsided right after the initial consultation.
